The up-to-wall clip plays an essential role by creating an expansion joint between the raised deck terrace and the edge restraints. The raised deck terrace, being a type of floating floor, is not permanently connected to the building's structural elements, neither from below nor from the sides. Separating the terrace from the edge restraints, which are most often: walls, parapet walls, balustrades, window joinery, etc., is intended to create a ventilation gap between the elements. The lack of proper separation and permanent connection of the two elements leads to the formation of damp areas, which over time can lead to mechanical damage and potential leaks. Contact points exposed to moisture are particularly susceptible to biological corrosion, which significantly affects the aesthetics of these areas. The raised deck terrace, as a floating floor, is subject to the phenomenon of thermal expansion, which causes fluctuations in the dimensions of the terrace surface. Therefore, it is essential to provide adequate expansion joints between the individual elements. Failure to use proper expansion joints can lead to the occurrence of stresses and damage to the terrace, cracking of pavers, and deformation of the edge restraint elements. The up-to-wall clip creates a gap of approx. 8 mm wide, which ensures the proper distance and prevents the formation of damp contact points and damage related to thermal expansion. In the case of materials characterized by greater thermal expansion, it may be necessary to increase the width of this gap. In the case of terraces with a significant surface area, where there is an uninterrupted terrace surface with a length of 10 m, it is necessary to calculate the permissible expansion dimensions of the terrace, based on the parameters provided by the terrace flooring manufacturer, such as pavers or decking boards.
Terrace or balcony designs often feature irregular shapes due to the individual architectural design. It is important to be aware that any atypical shapes significantly complicate the terrace installation process, not only for raised deck terraces but also for those installed traditionally with adhesive. If pavers are being laid on the terrace and so-called cut pieces are created, leaving a small element that, due to its size, cannot be supported by a minimum of three pedestals, an individual installation must be carried out. Cut pieces smaller than 25 cm are characterized by reduced strength. Before starting work involving the laying of pavers on a raised deck terrace, we recommend measuring the pavers. If the measurements show that, after cutting, the pavers will be less than 25 cm, we recommend also making a cut piece at the beginning of the terrace to avoid such small pavers. Individual installation of an element for a paver terrace: Under the pavers adjacent to the small cut piece, a stainless steel sheet should be placed, cut in such a way that it covers the area where the cut paver element is to be placed. The cut piece should be glued into that area, maintaining the same gap between pavers as exists across the entire terrace.
A properly designed terrace that incorporated raised deck technology from the very beginning should be free of areas where it is difficult to install terrace pedestals. In practice, however, various situations arise where difficulties occur with the installation of a raised deck terrace. In such cases, it is necessary to find an optimal installation solution, consistent with generally accepted building standards, that will ensure the durability of the terrace across its entire surface. This may include the use of atypical support pads for leveling the terrace or bonding the entire element. A raised deck terrace is characterized by open joints between the pavers. These joints ensure free airflow beneath the terrace and drainage of water from under each of the pavers. This is a huge advantage of a floating raised deck terrace. In traditional terraces, the joints between the pavers are filled with grout, which over time degrades under the influence of weather conditions, and water that penetrates beneath the tiles can cause damage to both the tiles and the substrate during freezing. In the case of pavers with perfectly even edges, such as 2 or 3 cm thick ceramic terrace tiles, we recommend using joint spacers with a width of 3 mm. However, for pavers with minor irregularities, such as stone tiles, we suggest using joint spacers with a width of 5 mm. We often hear concerns about the free drainage of rainwater with a 3 or 5 mm joint, but the answer is clear: a width of 3 mm or less guarantees free water drainage.

The self-leveling head is an additional element of the pedestal head, consisting of two components with a spherical shape. The terrace pavers rest on the head with their corner. Before laying the last fourth paver, the height can be adjusted using the nut on the pedestal to achieve the desired terrace level. After laying the pavers and walking on the terrace, the self-leveling head is loaded only in the vertical axis, so it does not change its position while walking on the terrace.

When planning a raised deck terrace, it is best to prepare a detailed design with a cross-section through the terrace layers in advance. Only completing the design will give us certainty that nothing will surprise us during construction. The optimal solution is to design an approximately 10-20 centimeter side finishing closure plate in the railing, whose height depends on the expected pedestal height. Another good solution for installing a raised deck terrace with a railing is to rest the last paver on an aluminum angle profile riveted to the railing. Such a mounted profile serves simultaneously as support and edge border for the terrace. Below we present a cross-section through such a terrace and photos. Raised deck terraces on pedestals installed on thermal insulation are susceptible to deflection, related to the reduced hardness of the substrate compared to, for example, a concrete substrate. It is entirely possible to install a raised deck terrace on thermal insulation, provided it has adequate hardness. It should be remembered that the minimum permissible substrate hardness is 200 kPa/m2, and the recommended value is 300 kPa/m2. Thanks to these parameters, we will avoid the risk of substrate deflection. Below are our recommendations regarding the hardness of XPS boards. In the case of the thermal insulation layer, it is most often necessary to apply roofing felt or another protective layer safeguarding the insulation against UV and oxidation, in accordance with the insulation manufacturer's recommendations and building practices. In exceptional cases, when the substrate under the raised deck terrace has been made without meeting the parameters described above, one can try to remedy the situation by increasing the surface area of the pedestal base. The larger the base surface area, the more the total load is distributed over a larger area, and therefore the substrate deflection during use will be smaller. One can try to use pedestals from the MAX series, which have a base diameter of 210 mm. One can also use pedestals with a side finishing closure plate DDP CP placed underneath, whose dimension is 257x257 mm. In cases where the substrate does not meet the recommended hardness parameters, tests should always be carried out to check the deflection of the substrate under the pedestal and to assess whether they are acceptable and permissible.
When installing terrace pedestals on a waterproofing layer, additional protection in the form of a separating element between the pedestal base and the substrate should be considered. Our pedestals feature specially designed, appropriately rounded edges to avoid damaging the insulation layer. Despite the fact that our customers have laid pedestals directly on the waterproofing without additional protection, our recommendation is to use See also: Terrace accessories if possible. These may also be protective pads made of another material, provided they effectively protect the insulation from damage.
Raised deck terraces are implemented as a floating technology, which means they do not require permanent bonding or anchoring to the substrate, similar to other floating floors. Recommendations regarding bonding or anchoring typically apply to specific areas of the terrace. Sometimes this is recommended, e.g., on the last rows of pedestals at the terrace edge, or for individual pedestals, to provide additional stabilization. In the case of terraces without edge restraints, or when installing vertical terrace finishing boards, the so-called bottom fascia boards, we recommend bonding the pedestals located at the terrace edge. A significant advantage of terraces on pedestals is that they do not require permanent fixing to the substrate, which minimizes the risk of damage to the frequently used waterproofing membrane. The raised deck terrace system is a response to bonded terraces, which in temperate climates can easily be damaged by cyclic freezing and thawing throughout the year when the temperature exceeds 0°C. It is possible to set pedestals on so-called "ground," however, such a base needs to be properly prepared. To set pedestals on the ground, approximately 50 cm of soil must be removed. Then, this area should be filled with aggregate, preferably coarser (about 40-80 mm), and then finer (0-20 mm), after which the layers should be thoroughly compacted with a compactor. However, it should be noted that such a base depends on local geological conditions, and despite proper layer application, ground settlement and the need for periodic pedestal adjustment cannot be ruled out. For setting pedestals directly on the ground, we recommend using concrete blocks, which provide stable and durable support for the pedestals. One of the key advantages of a floating raised deck terrace is that it does not require installation according to the slope or inclination of the surface on which it is placed, such as a roof or balcony. Thanks to this, it can serve as a natural extension of the indoor floor, providing the user with exceptional comfort. A raised deck terrace effectively drains water through the gaps between pavers or boards, which means that no slope is necessary for free water runoff. After rainfall, water may remain on the terrace surface, but it will quickly evaporate. It is worth noting that the phenomenon of water surface tension causes the ends of pavers or boards to dry slightly slower even on a slope. This is a natural phenomenon that can sometimes be incorrectly interpreted as an installation error or material defect, but it results from the properties of surface tension (similar to raindrops on a vertical window pane). In the case of raised deck terraces, we recommend using minimum slopes ranging from 1% to a maximum of 2%. These slight inclinations are practically invisible to the user, while effectively draining water from the terrace surface, ensuring protection of walls, window and door joinery from its effects.
Pedestals should be placed on a hard, level surface free of contaminants. In the case of surfaces covered with waterproofing, carefully review the layers beneath the waterproofing and the manufacturer's instructions. The pedestals are designed so that the underside of the base has no sharp edges that could damage the waterproofing. The most common types of waterproofing on which pedestals can be placed directly are cap sheet roofing felt, EPDM, PVC, as well as slurry waterproofing. Nevertheless, for complete safety, we recommend using SBR rubber pads. In the case of underlayment felt, liquid waterproofing, or other waterproofing for which the manufacturer recommends protective layers, an SBR rubber pad should be used, as there is a risk of damage. In cases where the waterproofing is laid directly on the thermal insulation layer, the compressive strength of the thermal insulation must be determined (the minimum value is 200 kPa/m2, the optimal value is 300 kPa/m2 or higher).
Based on our experience, built on thousands of completed projects, we have never encountered users complaining about this type of odor. The main reason this situation should not occur is that the roofing felt is not directly in the sun but under the terrace, covered by pavers or boards, so it does not heat up to very high temperatures. Furthermore, it is important that the roofing felt on which the terrace pedestals will be placed is a top-layer roofing felt without exposed asphalt adhesive, which could emit an unpleasant odor. Any doubts regarding the use of roofing felt as a base for a raised deck terrace should be consulted with the roofing felt supplier.
Raised deck terraces are completely demountable in a simple way, and it is also possible to inspect a single element. Very small contaminants, such as sand, penetrate under the terrace, which are usually flushed out by water. If the terrace is located next to trees or shrubs that shed pollen, the underside of the terrace can be rinsed with water or blown out with compressed air. Below is a photo of a terrace that was inspected after approximately 5 years from installation. The components of biological origin visible under the terrace undergo complete decomposition and are flushed out with water.
First of all, you should familiarize yourself with the paver manufacturer's recommendations regarding laying them on terrace pedestals. Installation that is not in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions may result in loss of warranty. We are not aware of any clear-cut research or scientific studies confirming the validity of adding a fifth pedestal in the middle, under the paver, as additional protection against paver cracking. Based on our analyses and experience, adding a pedestal should be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of paver, the substrate under the terrace, and the intended use of the terrace. Recommendations may vary; it is important to consider a few issues before making a decision: The issue of paver strength and the material it is made of Pavers made of various materials are used for laying on pedestals, such as ceramic, stone, and concrete (pressed, vibrated, reinforced). Each of these materials has different properties, and manufacturers use different production technologies. For laying pavers on pedestals, we recommend using only the highest quality pavers from reputable manufacturers who anticipate point support. The issue of substrate hardness Raised deck terraces on pedestals can be laid on various types of substrate. These can be hard substrates, such as concrete screed, concrete slabs, etc., as well as soft substrates, such as XPS insulation boards, PIR roof boards, etc. It should be remembered that the proper substrate hardness, recommended at 300 kPa/m², and the minimum permissible at 200 kPa/m², affects whether the terrace will flex during use. An additional pedestal can help distribute the terrace load over a larger area. The issue of terrace load When determining the number of pedestals needed under a terrace paver, the anticipated terrace loads should be analyzed, and the total load per square meter of the terrace should be calculated. Based on the calculations performed, it can be determined whether the use of an additional pedestal in the middle of the terrace paver is recommended. In practice, there are no specific limitations regarding the size of the paver, but limitations related to installation and transport should be taken into account. It is important to know the required support density for the specific material and the anticipated load. In most cases, it is sufficient to place the pedestals on a grid at a distance of approximately 60 cm. However, even in the case of pavers measuring 60 x 60 cm, it may be necessary to support not only the corners but also the center of the paver. In the case of larger pavers, such as 120 x 120 cm, the pedestals are placed at 60 cm intervals, i.e., at each corner, in the middle of all side edges, and under the paver. Increasing the density of the pedestal grid increases the load-bearing capacity of the system.
Most often, this depends on the thickness of the paver. In the case of ceramic pavers, this is usually a minimum of 2 cm, but it is always worth following the manufacturer's recommendation. As pedestal manufacturers, we recommend support at 4 points for 2 cm ceramic pavers and 5 cm concrete pavers. However, the number of support points depends on the paver manufacturer and the quality of the concrete. In the case of stone pavers, the number of support points depends on the type of material and the size of the paver, so you should always consult the manufacturer for appropriate guidelines regarding installation with point support of terrace pavers. The most commonly used materials from which joists laid on pedestals are made include: Terrace joists made of regional softwood, so-called softwood. This is a good material for installation on terrace pedestals, however, an appropriate joist size should be used so that it does not sag when walked on. However, if we decide to install on composite joists, one should choose the highest quality product and make sure that the manufacturer maintains the warranty for installation on terrace pedestals. Generally speaking, the spacing of pedestals depends on the material from which the joist is made, as well as its rigidity. Standardly, joists are placed at a distance of about 50 cm, and then often the pedestals are set at the same distance along the joists (which then gives 5-6 pedestals per square meter). The final spacing of pedestals, however, depends on the purpose of the upper surface and the loads to which it will be subjected. In the absence of instructions from the terrace joist supplier to determine the appropriate spacing of pedestals under the joists, it is best to perform a test consisting of setting the pedestals at a distance at which no deflection occurs when loaded with the weight of an adult person. Such a declaration is issued based on a construction standard appropriate for the given application, and in its absence, based on a National Technical Assessment, which may be issued by the relevant Technical Assessment Body. The Technical Assessment Body competent for pedestals is the Building Research Institute (ITB). According to the law, it is the ITB that makes the final assessment of whether a given product qualifies as a construction product or not. The self-leveling head is a separate component that can be used as an addition to pedestals from the Spiral, See also: Standard and See also: Max series. We use it when we want the pavers on our terrace to lie horizontally while the substrate beneath the pedestals has slopes. It helps correct the slope of the substrate from 0 to 8% (depending on the pedestal series). Our experience indicates that in the case of a slope on the substrate beneath the terrace of less than 2%, using the self-leveling head is not necessary. To level such a slight slope, an SH rubber shim is usually sufficient. We therefore recommend using the head when the slope of the surface exceeds 2%. Because it is a separate component, the customer can freely decide whether such an addition is needed or not, without having to overpay.
This is not required, we leave it to the decision of the terrace installer. However, we recommend using these pads, as they allow for leveling out minor unevenness in the pavers, positively affect acoustics (no so-called resonance box is created), and prevent unwanted sounds that may occur during use as a result of sand particles getting between the paver and the pedestal.

This process is carried out using a nut that rotates independently of the base, and the thread shape ensures stability without the need for readjustment. Top adjustment keys are only used in the case of a different pedestal design, for example when the screw is threaded into the base or when the pedestals have built-in self-leveling heads. Adjustable height pedestals from the RAPTOR series are based on the so-called wedge (step) technology, consisting of a lower and upper wedge. Height adjustment is achieved by sliding the upper wedge relative to the lower one along the teeth (so-called steps). Once the desired height is achieved, RAPTOR pedestals loaded with the weight of the terrace have no possibility of changing their height either up or down. A change in height could only occur as a result of significant vibrations that could shift the terrace structure, or in the case where the terrace had stresses causing part of it to lift upward. Unlike other solutions for leveling terraces using wedge pedestals, our RAPTOR series pedestals feature special holes into which a screw can be driven to permanently connect the lower and upper wedges. We recommend connecting the wedges with screws if the phenomena described above may occur, as well as additionally in non-standard locations and in rows of pedestals at the terrace edge. However, this is not required and should in each case be left to the decision of the terrace installer.
