Despite their relatively simple construction, pedestals are an extremely practical element that greatly facilitates terrace installation. However, how do you choose the right one that meets the project requirements?

What are adjustable terrace pedestals?

Adjustable terrace pedestals are the basic structural element of a raised deck terrace system, most often made of polypropylene (PP). Also called support pads or terrace supports. They enable precise leveling of the surface without the use of mortars, adhesives, or permanent bonding to the substrate; they are used for:

  • adjusting the height of the terrace,
  • compensating for substrate slopes,
  • point support of pavers or joists
  • protecting the waterproofing

It is thanks to them that it is possible to create:

  • a terrace without gluing

A typical adjustable pedestal consists of:

  1. Base - responsible for stable load transfer to the substrate
  2. Screw (thread) - enables smooth height adjustment

Spacing and load capacity of pedestals

The selection of pedestals depends on the size of the paver, the manufacturer's recommendations, and additional planned loads on the terrace.

For example:

  • paver 60×60 cm - support at the corners (every 60 cm),
  • paver 90×90 cm - support every 45 cm with additional support in the center
  • point loads (planters, pergolas) - denser pedestal spacing

Waterproofing protection

A raised deck terrace on pedestals is primarily about waterproofing protection; its full safeguarding allows the structure to be maintained in perfect condition.

The pedestals do not have sharp edges, so they will not damage the insulation, however, in the case of delicate materials, it is worth using additional SBR rubber pads, which also improve the acoustic comfort of the terrace.

Adjustable or fixed support pads?

In practice:

  • adjustable pedestals are used where height or slopes need to be leveled
  • fixed support pads work well on ground-level terraces or in places where an adjustable pedestal does not fit

Often both solutions are combined in one project, precisely because of the heights.

  2. Too large spacing of supports.
  3. Lack of compaction under point loads.
